LAKE DELHI (KWWL) A Manchester man pleaded not guilty to criminal charges after being accused of driving a vehicle that plunged into Lake Delhi, killing one passenger last month.According to online court records, Joshua C. Juengel entered a written plea this morning to charges of making a false report, leaving the scene of an accident and homicide by vehicle. He was arrested last month.Alex Salow, 23, was found dead in a car, which was sitting in about eight feet of water in Delhi Lake. Delhi and Manchester firefighters saw the man in the car with an underwater camera. A diver was called to the scene, and a crane was used to get the vehicle out of the water.Jengel told investigators that he had been in the vehicle with Salow but exited long before the vehicle went through the ice. Investigation at the scene indicated that another person had been in the vehicle when it went through the ice. Evidence shows that the vehicle was being operated in a reckless manner, then plunged through the ice Sunday, January 7. Juengel left the scene.”There’s evidence that suggests someone else might have been there,” said Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere Wednesday morning.According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation showed that Salow and a second person, who has been identified, left Smokey’s Grill on Sunday evening, January 7th around 7:30 8 PM and traveled northbound on the ice of Lake Delhi. As part of the investigation, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are seeking the public’s assistance. Investigators are trying to identify a separate driver who picked up the person who was in Salow’s vehicle in the area of Lake Delhi around 7:30 8:00 PM Sunday evening, and gave that person a ride to a residence in Manchester. The Delaware County Sheriff says neighbors saw a car doing doughnuts on Lake Delhi before a man’s body was pulled from the lake.Neighbors who live near Lake Delhi say they saw rescue crews and first responders in the area that evening. Mark Hempstead, who’s lived in the area more than 30 years, says it’s a first.”You have instances on the river, but never this close, not right out your front door,” said Hempstead. The news is shaking the close knit community of Delhi. Hempstead said he golfs with Salow’s uncles.”Terrible terrible, these are two of my best friends and to know they’ve lost someone in their family is terrible,” said Hempstead.”For years, you’ve seen vehicles all over that river, the ice gets that thick,” said Hempstead. “But I’m just afraid out here there’s a current. Ice is not going to build underneath of a current. It’s just a terrible terrible loss too young for this to happen to somebody.”Hempstead has one message for others going out on the ice.”Know your ice is thick enough before you go out there please,” said Hempstead. “I just lost a good family friend because of it.”UPDATE: Implosion of iconic bridge in Sabula, Jackson CountyVIDEO: Sabula bridge in Jackson County demolitionUpdated: Friday, March 9 2018 7:12 PM EST2018 03 10 00:12:38 GMTA long standing bridge in eastern Iowa comes crashing down during a demolition.A long standing bridge in eastern Iowa comes crashing down during a demolition.SIGNS OF SPRING: Birds flock back to the area as ice meltsSIGNS OF SPRING: Birds flock back to the area as ice meltsUpdated: Friday, March 9 2018 6:20 PM EST2018 03 09 23:20:48 GMT”It’s just a good excuse to get out finally, it’s not as icy on the trails as what it has been.””It’s just a good excuse to get out finally, it’s not as icy on the trails as what it has been.”Burlington man accused of purposely knocking baby to groundBurlington man accused of purposely knocking baby to groundUpdated: Friday, March 9 2018 5:59 PM EST2018 03 09 22:59:09 GMT
