mulberry daria clutch bag Backpage murderer Brown convicted on all counts
We are very pleased, Denise Higgins, mother of victim Vernithea McCrary, said outside the courtroom. It was obvious this guy was guilty. The prosecution had him from day one.
I couldn t believe the defense s defense. There wasn t one, because he didn t have one. Why does God put us through this? I don t understand. After he did what he did he should have confessed.
Attorney Therese Tobin, who lead the prosecution, said she was very secure in the quality of the case against Brown. Aiding her in the trial was assistant Macomb prosecutor and Chief of Homicides William Cataldo, who did not attend the verdicts announcement.
She believes law enforcement stopped a serial killer.
I don t think you can kill four people and stop, but I ll leave that to the psychologists, said Tobin, chief trial attorney.
Brown killed Renesha Landers, 23, and Demesha Hunt, 24, on Dec. He concealed their bodies in the trunks of the cars they rode in and abandoned them at homes near Interstate 94 and Outer Drive, in the neighborhood where he grew up. He burned the Buick LaSabre where placed Curtis and McCrary.
He was arrested May 1, 2012, after police tied him to the crimes through his and the victims mobile phones even though the phones were never recovered. Police received phone records in the months following the incidents.
Police also found Brown s skin cell DNA under the fingernails of Hunt and Landers, and three droplets of Curtis blood were found in his basement, where Brown also had cut out a large piece of carpeting in his bedroom.
In a second police interview Brown admitted he was with the women but asserted they died from other causes.
Prosecutors scoffed at claims the women died accidentally, naturally or by suicide.
The jury deliberated about four hours over two days following the more than three week trial in front of Judge James Biernat Jr. in Macomb County Circuit court in Mount Clemens.
The panel convicted him of four counts of first degree murder, four counts of disinterment or mutilation of a body and two counts of arson for burning the vehicle and garage. The jury had the option of the lower charge of second degree murder.
He will be sentenced to life in prison without parole April 15.
Jurors stoically walked out of the courtroom as a group following the verdict.
Chikita Madison, mother of Renesha Landers,
who was standing near the elevators, yelled to jurors, Thank you, bless you.
Madison said she wishes Michigan had the death penalty for Brown.
I am happy for the verdict. I m happy with the decision that the jurors made, but I will always still be hurt for the rest of my life, Madison said. I ll never be right again without my girls (her daughter and family friend Hunt). I just wish we had the electrocution chair or something here. I want a life for a life. He needs to die. He needs to die. He killed them girls and he needs to pay for that.
Landers brother, Devante Burton, 21, in the courtroom moments after the verdicts were read, told Brown, Hang yourself multiple times before he was removed by court officers.
He should hang himself because of what he did, Burton said later. He got what he got so he s going to suffer the rest of his life.
Brown didn t display a reaction to the verdict. He appeared nervous during the hearing, examining his handcuffs while walking into the courtroom.
Tobin said Brown killed for the thrill and enjoyment.
Higgins, McCray s mother, who attended the entire trial, called him a sociopath and narcissist.
That boy had made up his mind up the day he murdered my daughter he was going to murder somebody, anybody, she said. He had already went to the site where he dumped the bodies hours before the killings, based on his phone records.
She also blamed Brown s mother, who testified during the trial.
This man was wretched. And I very much hold his mother responsible, at his age living with his mother, she said. I got no forgiveness with him. No, you (Brown) never admitted to what you did so I can t forgive you.
