When police questioned Johnson, he told officers he was waiting for a date. Police found papers in Johnson car that had the woman address, her license plate number and plate numbers of her family members, Gengler said. He also had $9,000 in cash.

He was convicted of fatally shooting Michael Beshoar, 22, of Morris, in October 1993. Beshoar was dating Johnson ex girlfriend, who had an order of protection against Johnson.
Police at the time said Beshoar was trying to drive Johnson away when he showed up at the woman Joliet home the night of the shooting.
The two men fought and Johnson used a shotgun he had in his car to shoot Beshoar in the side. He then shot him three more times in the back and neck. Johnson was arrested for the shooting after a car chase on Interstate 80 that ended in a cornfield near Ottawa.
